People are Talking about “Insight”

I enjoyed your Insight program last night on KNCT. It was the first for me to see. I liked the topic: the approaches and selection criteria for the represented news media–television, print news, and radio talk show. Your chosen people to reflect those news vehicles was excellent as well. The three ladies demonstrated very well their experience and knowledge of their respective crafts. And they were engaging personalities.

Your clips of off-the-street (or should we say out-of-the-restaurant!) people was an interesting way of directing the program content and also grounding it in, for the most part, real life perceptions. On the face of it, talk shows might seem to be “fly by the seat of your pants.” It was informative to hear Ms. Anderson tell how topics for the daily programs was purposely selected with a sense for its interest quotient to the listeners, and then the range of topics for the day were pushed through to keep things moving and listeners plugged in.

I have to say that usually, just a little bit of Lynn Wooley on any particular day is enough for me. It is the same for me of Rush Limbaugh. Rush has great ideas and argues his points so well; but his pomposity, when it is unleashed, urns me off, and I turn him off. Similarly, I like Lynn’s thinking and he has some interesting guests, but he can also get too cutting and strident in his statements for me.

I have always enjoyed KXXV newscasts and Ann Harder, so it was interesting to hear her tell how news stories are selected and followed.

Although I don’t read the Killeen paper very often, it was good to “meet” Ms. Pena and learn what she does and how she sees newspapers finding their place among the other news venues. And I always appreciate hearing a professional person cknowledging the importance to them of their faith, as Ms. Pena did at one point.

I have enjoyed your calmer, more reflective style on the radio this week, Mary Beth. You have things to say and nice insights; its more like you hold them out to be taken or nottaken, rather than thrusting them at us. I prefer that style.

I was in Canada during the initial broadcast of your show, “Insight”. I’m glad to have caught tonight’s rebroadcast. I know this is such an exciting and rewarding time for you and your crew.

As a fellow female radio/tv personality myself, I want to thank you for having the vision and energy to embark upon such an endeavor. Although currently a lawyer, you still “keep hope alive” for many women in the area, myself included.

Even though the KISD School Board elections are over, my interest and advocacy for our youth has not ceased. I hope to be a guest on a future show to share my passion and commitment to the future generations in Central Texas and communities around the world.

Once again, I applaud your efforts and look forward to many more timely and interesting “Insight” shows. I’ll keep sneaking a peak at your future show topics on your website.

Mary Beth Harrell’s Biography

Mary Beth HarrellMary Beth, and her husband, Bob, have been part of the Fort Hood community since they were first stationed here in 1987. When Bob retired after serving for 23 years, Mary Beth was able to realize her life-long dream of completing law school.

She graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas in 1998, and has practiced law in Bell, Coryell and Lampasas counties, as well as in Federal Court. Mary Beth has served as City prosecutor for Nolanville and Temple.

Mary Beth and Bob have three children and three grandchildren. Their boys, Josh and Rob, serve on active duty in the US Army, Rob will return to Iraq in the Fall. Mary Beth and Bob recently became grandparents for the fourth time. Their daughter Tonya gave birth to a beautiful baby girl - her first. Tonya’s husband Hugo Rosas is currently attending training to become a US Border Patrol Agent. Bob Harrell is a retired Army Warrant Officer, businessman, and serves on reserve duty as an Investigator for the Coryell County District Attorney.

Mary Beth co-chairs the Gatesville Boys and Girls Club’s Capital Campaign. Mary Beth and Bob are members of the Killeen, Copperas Cove, Temple and Gateville Chambers of Commerce, the Lions Club, Association of the US Army (AUSA), and the Exchange Club.

Mary Beth and Bob live on a small ranch in Gatesville where they raise a few head of cattle, like to ride their horses and tend to their dogs.

Welcome to Insight, this isn’t just another TV talk show. We focus on Texas, and only Texas. Did you know that our population is growing so fast that we’ll get four – count’em – 4 – new seats in the U.S. Congress in 2010? Hot Dawg! Did you know that we also have the highest number of high school drop-outs, that we’re number one in teen pregnancies, and we have some of the highest healthcare premiums and highest number of uninsured in the country?

Yet people and businesses are flocking to our great state in record numbers because we have no state income tax and very affordable housing. We’re a right-to-work state (no unions, please) so we’re real business-friendly, as they say. Our state legislature only meets every two years and we elect our judges – we’re real proud of that. We’ve amended our State Constitution so many times that most of us have lost count.

And we’ll bet you didn’t know that our Governor is working hard to push through what many claim is a NAFTA superhighway from the Mexican border all the way to Kansas City. And while he’s at it, he’s fast-tracking the construction of nuclear reactors and coal-burning plants.

Mary Beth a trial attorney, retired Army wife with two sons serving on active duty – the oldest is in Iraq again, a proud grandma, part-time college professor, and businesswoman. Mary Beth has also been known to tilt at windmills. In 2006, she was the only Democratic woman to run against a Republican incumbent in Texas for the US House of Representatives – in George W. Mary Beth Harrell will host and produce KNCT-TV’s newest summer series, “Insight”.

Mary Beth will talk to the successful, influential women who help shape the issues that affect everyone in Central Texas. These women are outstanding leaders who understand the challenges confronting us in education, healthcare, banking, the news media, the courtroom, economic development, faith, charitable giving, and city management. “Our guests will not only identify the challenges but also talk about they are working to meet those challenges now and in the future,” Harrell said.

Mary Beth will host a half-hour roundtable discussion with three guests on each show.  Some of her guests include Channel 25 News Anchor Ann Harder, Temple City Councilwoman Martha Tyrock, Killeen City Councilwoman Dr. Claudia Brown, Sue Mayborn, Diane Connell, Colonel Diane Sutton, Colonel Victoria Bruzese, Reverend Mary Wilson, Colleen Beck, Brenda Coley, Dr. Rose Cameron, Judge Diane Henson and Judge Martha Trudo. 

Mary Beth went on location to popular local restaurants to interview Central Texans about the issues.  Their opinions will be aired during each show.  “We wanted to bring our community into the studio so our guests can hear their opinions and concerns.  We hope our viewers – and our guests - will find the exchange enlightening and entertaining.”
